Sunset at Sea

Riding this river of time, daytime flowed into night. Balconies rose above us, nobody there. An empty lifeboat waited for a day we hoped would never come.

Out there, on the ocean, it was a tiny cruise ship world, and thousands of people enjoyed the ride. A setting sun was such a great dessert.

Sometimes, it seems we have to get away, but not too far. We are a herd, craving company. Cruise ships are not solitary camps on mountaintops. Here were small crowds of people, living in small and private tribes, their small and private lives.

An old man said he owned a chain of stores. We saw none of them in that empty cruise ship world. Stores might remain after we leave this world, stores and ships, small crowds of people everywhere. An empty world, we leave it all behind.
