Volcano Edge Ferns

on the edge of disaster,
they clutch crater edges,
hang on like death,

hotter than fire
molten rock rises
from tropical earth.

trembling as old lava
creates new meanings,
referencing nothing
that's ever been before,

or maybe not.
it could be that it's
all been said before.
we'd never know.

roots travel down.

plants like these,
thrive if water
can be found.

the ferns are bigger
than i ever saw.
strange vegetation,
alien to my eyes.

what happens
when the lava rises?
i don't want to know.
