Republic Street Balcony

Republic Street Balcony

from the balcony
we could see
crowds lining up

for hamburgers
unlike local food;

authenticity
does not seem
to matter here.

across the street
a museum of
archaeology,

(closed now,
pestilence
trumps anything
even mildly
interesting).

death beckons
for all of us.

i have ignored
the call for
many years,

and hope to
continue my
wilfulness.

and maybe
we'll return
someday,

see that balcony,
visit the museum,

maybe stand
in line for awful
hamburgers,

that remind us
of home.
