it is a rocky shore,
on the edge of 
a watery lake.


water dragons
of dubious repute
have been seen,

they say and they
seem to have lost
credibility thereafter.


questions of witness
sobriety and their
sanity perhaps,

it doesn't pay to 
say what you saw.

only a mile away,
first peoples said
was the home
of the creature,


a monster bigger
than a human,
yet unknown to
our zoologists,

big as an orca,
a shape somewhat
like an overturned
canoe and bigger,

visible ribs and 
vertebrae, covered
by a blackish skin...


and suddenly,
you don't want to 
walk near the
lakeshore any more.

worst of all near 
rattlesnake island, 
favorite haunt of a
mythical monster
some have said.
