Sepia Tree

a discoloured,
faded photo of
this disreputable
tree looks very old.

(like something
much more recent
than dinosaur bones)

like something just
around a corner we
recently turned
and already forgot.

shiny black and
discoloured white,

with passing time,
it becomes sepia,

a tone of failing
memories, it is
how we fail
to remember.

sepia seems a
failed colour,

but signals
powerful story,
hiding in shadows.

granny lived more
than a hundred years.

but not always
aware and alert.

she did for a while,
say "lah lah lah lah".

we found her
sepia-toned
wedding photos.

they wore amazing
costumes to
our modern view.

but now they too
have turned sepia.
