Ruins and Palms

   things will break
in a big earthquake.

we walked south
      along the street.

   people lived there
two thousand years ago.

and so our feet took us
where people used to go.

there were slave-built
   roads and buildings.

an ugly situation.

it didn't matter much
      to nature's forces:

the niceties of
   human society.

      nature spoke
the earth rumbled
   buildings fell.

      they still fall;
they fall again.
