Mountain Pass

      black and white
reveals a few truths

impossible to see
   in normal colour.
(details emerge.)

there is some beauty
      visible there
even without colour.

   gravity attempts
to pull everything
      to the centre.

   plate tectonics
permit movement

but solid rock yields,
   bends and breaks,

      becomes a barrier
to us tiny feeble things.

      a wall of rock,
broken in few places.

   there we go,
from east to west
      or back.

mountains always
      make me feel
appropriately small.

   (not a bad thing)
