Spring by the Lake

the water's cold
   although the
      ice is gone.

   we know icy water
from almost before
      we were young .

   stick your toes
in springtime's
      chilly water.

your toes went in
      to the ankle;
you know cold water
for long as you live.

      deep chill,
      down deep
to where light fades

into featureless
      blurry shadow

      diffuse light
seems to come
from every place.

interesting days,
      we still survive:

      icy weather,
   cold spring water
chills our toddler toes.

Kal Lake #3 (2020)

Kal Lake #3 (2020)

Kal Lake #3

      green water
stretches from
   shore to shore

a day like this
   invites a
roadside visit

   a travel mug
of coffee and
      plastic chairs

and so we sit,
   visiting
      at a
distance

   sometimes
listening
   to birds,
      sometimes
enjoying
   the view

Wonder

How can we help but wonder
how we got such egos,
how such misplaced
admiration
ever got so far.

We fall into holes
of our own digging
and
dig deeper.

Ugly, clever
monkeys,
we run our
dubious enterprises
with leaders
known to
be foolish
or evil,
and then
congratulate
ourselves for
our wisdom.

How can we help but wonder
how we got such egos,
how such misplaced
admiration
ever got so far.

Reflected Colour

1. Reflected colour
brighten
these scenes.
Blue skies
and butterflies
excite
all our dreams.

2. Big lakes
with monsters,
when we’re aware,
primeval dragons
give us a scare.

3. He lived
his life,
as best as
he could,
did what
a man should do,
as he
understood.

4. Born in the
sunshine,
she seems
to glow.
A special
happiness
livens her show.

Light the Way

____NovemberSunset_2018aAnd now she’s gone.

She left, she passed away.

So many walks and talks

we might have had,

the things that

she might say…

As if I might explore,

and things I could

have found and

shown and then

a light might show:

a sunbeam on bare

earth. a message

now, a whisper

from a past unknown.

It takes me to a

past (that never

was), yet there

it is, a message

clear:

You were my child,

to me you were so

dear. I will go on

before you and

will light the way.
